Dogs in buggies

A smoother day out starts with the surface.

Dog buggies can help older, recovering and less-mobile dogs enjoy more of the Lakes—but an “accessible” route is not automatically suitable for every pet stroller. Wheel size, buggy width, gradients, gates and recent rain all matter.

Best fit

Coniston & South Lakes

Tarn Hows main circuit

Nearby Gale Bay has steep ramps and is not an equivalent easy option.Check the official route
All-terrain

Coniston & South Lakes

Ridding Wood trail at Grizedale

A 1.34km woodland route on a wide tarmac path, now listed as Miles Without Stiles ‘for some’. The surface alone does not establish whether it suits your loaded dog buggy. Before you goCheck the full terrain details and forestry diversions before choosing it.Check the official route

Miles Without Stiles

No stiles doesn’t always mean a smooth ride.

The National Park now uses four grades based on surfaces and slopes. These describe the walking route—not a guarantee for every dog buggy. Check the exact section, your equipment and current notices.

For all
Smoother, firmer paths and gentler gradients. A useful starting point for comparing buggy routes.
For many
Rougher surfaces or steeper stretches. Robust all-terrain equipment may be needed.
For some
More demanding slopes, rough stone or small steps. Assess the whole route with particular care.
Challenging
Steep or rough terrain for very confident users. Not a standard dog-stroller recommendation.

Access notices checked 30 August 2026: Yewdale Bridleway has flood damage affecting wheeled access. Keswick Railway Path has a 75cm temporary bridge footway and a further partial closure scheduled from 7 September for eight weeks. Gale Bay has steep ramps and a cross-slope. Read the live official notices before travelling.

Keep dogs under close control, use leads near livestock, follow local signs and take filled poo bags away with you. Toilets, gates and transport access need checking too.

These suggestions use official accessibility information as a guide; suitability for a particular dog buggy is an informed comparison, not a guarantee. Conditions and access can change.
